Slidin’: head-1st or feet-1st?
The other day, I was reading a article in ESPN the Magazine about sliding. I learned that Ty Cobb was quite the dirty player as a bass-runner – foot on the bag & cleats in the fielder. I also read stuff about never sliding into 1B & that play in that Oakland vs. NY post-season game where Jeter made that freakish play & Jeremy Giambi would’ve could’ve should’ve slid.
So as a baseball fan, which is preferable, sliding feet- or head-1st? Have u seen runners contort their body by rolling away from the fielder b4 tagging the bag w/ their hand or perhaps foot? & what was a cool play where a fielder tagged out a runner where he woulda been safe under ordinary circumstances? Thumbs-up for past (or present) baseball players answerin’.
Yeah, I read in that magazine that there was no such statistic as “caught stealin’” in olden days. So 4 some legendary base-stealers, there’s no telling just how accurate they were regarding the ratio of stolen basses 2 steal attempts, I think.

Head first dive is a faster way of getting to the bag then sliding,If you slide feet-first, your feet will dig into the ground instead, slowing your motion. Some people prefer to slide feet-first though so that they can pop up when they reach the base and avoid sliding past it.
